Roxanne’s Postpartum Preparation:
With my upcoming birth getting closer and closer, I have started preparing not just for birth, but postpartum as well!
A lot of the time we only prepare for birth, and then postpartum hits us hard with a Mack truck. That was my experience, at least after my first was born
This time around, I will prepare a lot more to help ease my transition from a mom of 2 to a mom of 3 while recovering from childbirth!

Ok, let’s continue…
The main things I will be prepping are:
- Household needs priorities and delegations
- Food/Meals
- Older Children/Pet Needs
- Postpartum/Newborn care supplies
- Appointment Plans
Household Needs
Household needs consist of the things that need to be done in our house to keep it afloat that I can no longer do.
My husband and I do a pretty good job of splitting the household demands, but I won’t be doing what I normally do, like laundry or making dinner, while I am recovering from birth. I will need someone else to do it, and it will either be him or my mom in most cases!
We sit down and decide what tasks must be done and what tasks we can neglect during those first few weeks postpartum. So things like mowing the lawn or cooking 5-course dinners are not going to be high on the list compared to taking out the trash or laundry.
- Priorities for our household
- Trash
- Dishes
- Laundry
- Tidying around the house
- We hired a housecleaner to help with big cleaning tasks like kitchens and bathrooms
- We might hire landscapers to keep the lawn tidy while my husband is doing other things and not able to take care of the lawn because it is not a priority
Food/Meal Planning
Food and Meal planning is one that takes the most prep in my opinion.
Eating nutritious food during the postpartum period is SO important to help with healing after birth! It can be one of the easiest things to forget about until the time comes.
My husband is not a gourmet chef, so we need to figure out easy meals for him to be able to put together for me and the kids. My mom will cook many meals for me and then have some meals prepped ahead of time.
Fed and Fit has a great postpartum meal prep plan on their site for those looking to prep meals!!
Other ideas for prepping meals:
- Host a meal prep baby shower where people bring a prepped freezer meal OR crockpot bag meal for you
- Register for Meal delivery (Doordash, Uber eats) giftcards
- If there is a meal delivery service in your area, register for gift cards for their services or sign up for their delivery to get home cooked meals delivered straight to your door. We use a local business Spoonlickers, which does nutritious meals delivered right to our front door!
- Having someone set up a Meal Train for those who are nearby and want to support you with home cooked meals!
- Having an account with grocery delivery or grocery pickup can make it easier to get food into the house. We use Instacart for our grocery delivery and it saves us so much time! (Use this link to get $30 off your first order!)
- Using subscription box services where they deliver quality foods for meals! Some boxes we use are ButcherBox for quality meats, and Wildgrain for breads and grains!
Other Children/Pet Car
Who will be taking care of and entertaining your other children and pets?
This is where extra help makes a difference. Finding out who will be caring for your other children or pets while you are not just recovering but also potentially giving birth!
- Birth care: Having a few different plans can also be helpful just in case someone is busy when you go into labor to watch your children or pets.
- For us, my dad will be watching our kids while I am in labor, and then both parents will be watching them until we are discharged from the hospital!
- Postpartum care: Who will be taking the kids to their activities? Who will be taking the kids to necessary appointments? Can someone take the kids during the day to the park or play museum for them to run around so you can rest with the baby? These are all great questions to help get you prepped for postpartum.
- Mostly this will be my husband and family.
- Gina and her kids will likely come over or have play date with my kids to entertain them.
- My parents are also super close by to take kids to activities and play dates.
- We prepare open-ended play for the older kids that they get once the baby is born to entertain them.
- We like to prepare sensory bins and new toys they want. There are tons of pre-made sensory bins online that you can purchase that are cheaper than buying all the supplies needed to make the bins yourself. Amazon List
- We also buy the kids a “gift” from their new sibling. Usually toys that they were wanting and asking for. I have purchased trucks for my son and Mermaid/Little Mermaid items for my daughter
- A basket of random toys for when you are nursing that the kids get to play with ONLY when you are nursing. Can be a basket of ANYTHING!
- Prepare them to “help” with the new baby by getting them a baby doll to practice with during pregnancy. Our kids have the one from Lovevery (Use code LOVEMAMASTEFIT40 for $20 off your first 2 playkits) that came in one of the play kits and my daughter loves changing the baby’s diapers.
- Pets: My husband usually assumes responsibility for all things for our dog.
- We will make sure all her vet appointments are done before my due date
- He takes her for her daily walks while I am resting. This is a great opportunity for them also to take the older kids and get them involved with walks with the pets.
Postpartum/Newborn Supplies
Gathering all my postpartum/newborn car supplies that I will need the first month postpartum ahead of time to make the transition easier. I have learned from the past two postpartum what things I will actually use for both baby and I
Items I am getting:
- Postpartum
- Disposable underwear/diapers because it is just easier than using the mesh underwear and pads that move around or are uncomfortable. You will be bleeding for 4-6 weeks postpartum as the uterine wound heals. Having reliable and easy to change out pads make it less stressful. Once bleeding has slowed down I will switch to just maternity pads, but that wont be till at least the 2/3 week.
- Peribottles, especially the one that has the V at the bottom to make it easier to clean and angle. This is a gentle way to clean the perineum/vagina, as it heals from childbirth. You want to avoid using toilet paper or lots of wipes on the sensitive area.
- Perineal spray/balms to aid in healing of the perineum
- Numbing spray, will likely get this from the hospital but want to make sure I ask for it before I am discharged if i have any lacerations. Makes the healing process of the laceration more tolerable.
- Comfy Lounge clothes:
- Robe and Slippers
- Baobei Bloomers (only need 1 or 2 because we wear these OVER our disposable pads/underwear) Use code MAMASTEFIT for 15% off
- Comfy Nursing Bras (Baobei and Itsbodily)
- Nursing Supplies: Silverettes, nursing pads (Bamboobies are the only ones that have worked for me), Haaka and Ladybug milk collector, breastmilk bags to store milk that I collect, coconut oil (for when i don’t use the Silverettes), hand pump/breast pump (not needed immediately but ordering during pregnancy is recommended)
- Baskets organized with different items in their designated spots:
- Perineal Care baskets in the bathrooms
- Newborn baskets with diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, plus items for me like nursing pads, bras, snacks, and toys for older kids
- Snacks that are easy to grab and nutritious
- Paleovalley meat sticks
- Lactation cookies/power balls
- Trail mixes
- Needed Collagen to add to drinks/snacks
- Water Bottle and electrolytes
- Big water bottle: Stanley, Easyjug (Use code MAMASTEFIT10 for 10% off)
- Electrolytes like LMNT and Needed hydration support (Use Code MAMASTEFIT for 20% off Needed first time orders)
- Newborn: Babies do not need a lot of stuff the first few weeks!
- A few onesies in both newborn and 0-3 sizes just in case baby is bigger than expected, our daughter was 8lbs 3oz and was only in newborn for a few days, but our son wore the newborn size for a lot longer!
- Diapers in newborn and size 1, we have set up the subscription for diapers through Hellobello and will start it once she is born! Use code ROXANNEA for 20% off your own subscriptions box
- Baby Wipes, our favorite brand is Pampers Pure!
- Diaper Rash Cream, my favorite brand is no longer made so we kind of go between hellobello and a brand my mom buys
- Play Mat for baby to lay on and do tummy time. I have purchased the Lovevery play gym, Rudie Nudie mat, and then one from Etta Loves that is high contrasting colors!
- Lounger to put baby down
- dock-a-tot or lounger
- bouncer/rocker
- Baby Carrier: I personally loved the ring sling for when they are newborn sized. I have a Wildbird ring sling prepped! Use code MAMASTE10 for 10% off
Appointment Plans
We will need to go to certain appointments in the postpartum period. How will i get to these appointments and who will come with me are big questions.
- Newborn: I have to be the one to take baby to their appointments because we plan to breastfeed. My husband or I will ask one of my parents to drive with me there if needed to help with baby. Especially that first 48 hour appointment!
- Postpartum: My 4-8 week postpartum appointment I will need to have someone come with me to watch baby during the visit. If my husband is still on paternity leave he will be the one, but if not my mom will come to help me!
By having all the above things ready and prepped before labor, this can help set me up for an easier transition during postpartum!
