4 Tips for Leveraging Social Media to Expand Your Business
We can use social media to connect on a deeper level with our potential clients! Social media is one way that I learn about the personality of a brand and if they are a person/brand that I connect with on a personal level.
If I connect with a brand, I am more likely to purchase a product from them or join a course.
Why? Because social media has become a vetting method to learn about:
- A brand’s mission:
- Learning about their why helps me as a potential customer understand why this product is worth my investment
- Educational style
- Learning how a brand approaches education and its personality helps me decide if I want to learn more from them, or if I think its teaching style will be helpful for me
- Level of expertise
- How does the brand display its expertise? Are they creating their own content or do they always repost other people’s content?
- Personal Connection
- We can use social media to connect with our followers! I love when brands share about themselves, without oversharing, so that I can recognize that this is a real person on the other end too.
We can use these same vetting methods to leverage our own social media platform to increase our reach to more followers and potential clients!
1) Defining Your Purpose and Motivation
As you develop your business, decide what your mission and ultimate purpose is with your business. While making money is usually a motivator for a business, your why and mission need to be much more than making money.
What is the purpose of your business, and why you want to invest your time and energy into this business.
For us, our purpose was to help other people in the perinatal journey to feel confident as they navigated their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
The result? We get to hear SO many stories from women and families around the world that tell us that our content and our course has helped them have an empowering pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience.
Knowing that we are supporting our global community with our mission is worth the time and effort that we put into MamasteFit.
If your business is focused on its mission which is beyond making money, it is obvious to your potential customers that you genuinely care about them and their experience. It is also really obvious when making money is the main focus of a business.
2) Creating Educational Content
After over a year of being on social media, our main focus was on in-person clientele and using our social media to attract new in-person clients.
I wanted to demonstrate that I was a trusted professional for my potential clients, so I shifted our Instagram focus to educational content.
We saw an increase in followers as we shifted to more educational content, especially when we used more visual aids and kept content simple.
You have an expertise that is worth sharing about! And you can share that in a unique way that will help you stand out.
Developing your educational style and figuring out what resonates best with your followers will rely on using your analytics and listening to your followers’ feedback.
3) Position Yourself as the Authority in Your Field
Social media is a great way to take a quick glance if someone is an expert in their field.
If someone is regularly reposting others’ content, and not creating their own content, it can give the impression that they are not the expert and rely on the expertise of others to educate their followers and customers.
What does this mean?
It means you should create your own content! It can be scary to film yourself and to put yourself out there but JUST DO IT.
And then learn from the feedback. Did people engage with your post? Review the insights: how many people saved or shared the post; how many people commented or liked the post? Then monitor the insights to see what type of content your followers tend to share more (how you get more reach) and interact, and create more content like that!
If you use others as your inspiration or you learn a concept from someone else, credit them! It doesn’t take away from your expertise.
We all learn things from others, and we take those ideas and expand on them to create something new. But if you are in the beginning stages of development, it is okay (and preferred) to credit the original creator.
4) Creating a Community
Social media is about connection: we want to virtually connect with other people. This includes connecting with brands and businesses! I find that Instagram is the best platform for us as a business.
When you are on social media, people want to connect with a PERSON, even if it is a business. So, show your face! Show how you are solving your problems with your expertise. Show how you are like your customers. Share about yourself and put yourself out there!
