Thyroid health is a critical aspect of a woman’s overall well-being, particularly when it comes to fertility, pregnancy, and the postpartum period. As a perinatal fitness trainer and birth doula, and currently pregnant with my fourth child, I have firsthand experience in understanding and managing thyroid health. This journey has shaped my approach to pregnancy and beyond, and I hope sharing my story can help others in similar situations.
Discovering My Thyroid Issues
My journey with thyroid health began while trying to conceive our second baby. After months of trying, we were ecstatic to finally get pregnant. However, a missed miscarriage at nine weeks brought unexpected heartache and confusion. This was followed by another miscarriage, leading my compassionate provider to conduct extensive blood work. It was then that I discovered I had hypothyroidism and elevated thyroid antibody levels, known as TPO antibodies, which were likely contributing to my recurrent pregnancy losses.
The Role of Thyroid Health in Pregnancy
Once my thyroid issues were identified, I began taking thyroid medication and made significant lifestyle changes. I adopted the autoimmune paleo diet, which helped reduce my thyroid antibody levels, and within a month, I became pregnant with my son. Throughout this pregnancy, my thyroid levels were closely monitored. I felt very fortunate to not have any complications from my thyroid during my pregnancy and postpartum, for both myself and my son.
Preconception and Pregnancy Care
For my current pregnancy, I’ve continued to prioritize my thyroid health. Here’s what I’ve been doing to support my thyroid function during preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum:
Regular Blood Work and Monitoring:
- My provider and I monitor my thyroid levels every four to six weeks. This helps adjust my medication dosage as needed and ensures optimal thyroid function throughout the pregnancy. Throughout my pregnancy, my medication dosage has slightly increased from preconception, and we anticipate it will increase at least once more before I give birth.
- My provider also does regular growth ultrasounds to check on my baby’s growth, since thyroid issues could impact her development throughout my pregnancy.
B12 Injections:
- Low B12 levels can contribute to hypothyroidism. Monthly B12 shots have significantly improved my energy levels and overall thyroid function.
Thyroid Medication:
- My thyroid medication dosage is adjusted based on regular blood tests. The dosage is typically higher during pregnancy to support the increased demands on my thyroid.
Supplements and Nutrition:
- I take Needed’s prenatal vitamins, which include essential nutrients like selenium, zinc, iodine, copper, and magnesium. These supplements are crucial for supporting thyroid health. You can use code MAMASTEFIT for 20% off your first order
- Additionally, I focus on an anti-inflammatory diet, ensuring I eat enough to meet my body’s needs, particularly important given my tendency to have a low appetite.
Stress Management and Sleep:
- Managing stress and getting adequate sleep are vital for reducing inflammation and supporting thyroid health. I aim for eight to nine hours of sleep per night and use relaxation techniques such as Epsom salt baths and magnesium supplements.
Personal Insights and Recommendations
Every person’s journey with thyroid health is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. Here are some personalized tips based on my experience:
- Get Regular Check-ups: Work with a knowledgeable provider to monitor your thyroid levels, especially if you have a history of thyroid issues or symptoms.
- Adopt a Supportive Diet: Consider an anti-inflammatory diet and include foods rich in essential nutrients.
- Take Necessary Supplements: Consult your provider about supplements that can support thyroid health.
- Manage Stress and Prioritize Sleep: Implement strategies to reduce stress and ensure you get adequate rest.
Conclusion
Thyroid health plays a vital role in supporting a healthy pregnancy, successful birth, and smooth postpartum recovery. By sharing my journey, I hope to highlight the importance of thyroid function and encourage others to seek the support they need.
