Preparing for postpartum can be as challenging as pregnancy itself. As a perinatal fitness trainer and birth doula, now pregnant with baby number four, I’ve learned that organizing the right tools and products in advance helps immensely. Here’s a peek into what I’m preparing to have in my bathroom after birth, based on what has worked for me in previous postpartum experiences. I’ve gathered these essentials to ensure comfort, hygiene, and healing after the baby arrives.
The Postpartum Bathroom Basket
I like to set up postpartum kits around the house, especially in the bathroom. This basket of essentials makes navigating the first few weeks postpartum a little easier. Here’s what I have ready:
1. Peri Bottle
Using a peri bottle instead of toilet paper can be a lifesaver, especially if you have any tears. I prefer the Bodily Angled Peri Bottle because of its design—it has a large capacity and a convenient angled handle, making it easier to use. You fill it with warm water and spray as you pee, which helps reduce any stinging and keeps the area clean.
2. Perineal Spray
After cleaning with the peri bottle, I like to soothe the area with Earth Mama’s Perineal Spray. This is particularly comforting if you’ve had stitches, but even without tearing, it helps calm the skin after the trauma of birth.
3. Postpartum Diapers
Forget the large pads—I’ve found that postpartum disposable diapers are much more comfortable and secure. My go-to is the Rael Disposable Underwear, which I used during my last postpartum recovery. They’re easy to use and feel more reliable during those initial heavy-bleeding days.
4. Gentle Compression Bloomers
After putting on my diaper, I slip on Bao Bei Bloomers–use code MAMASTEFIT for 15% off. These offer light compression, which provides some support without putting too much pressure on the pelvic floor. They’re soft and comfortable, which is exactly what you need in those early days.
5. Breastfeeding Bras
Comfort is key when you’re constantly breastfeeding. I love the Bao Bei Bralette, which is a pull-down style with no clips, making nursing easy. For extra support, I also have the Bodily Everything Bra, which is soft and non-compressive, preventing clogged ducts while providing gentle support.
6. Heating Pad
Postpartum cramps can be brutal, especially after subsequent pregnancies. I’ve stocked up on a battery-powered heating pad from Pixie Cup–-use code MAMASTEFIT for 15% off and free shipping. It’s great not only for soothing cramps but also during labor for added comfort.
7. Sitz Bath Herbs
For healing and relaxation, I’ve prepared sitz bath herbs. Steeping and adding these to a warm bath helps soothe the perineal area and promotes healing after birth. It’s a soothing ritual I look forward to during recovery.
More Resources for Postpartum Recovery
These are the essentials I’ve gathered for my bathroom as I prepare for my fourth baby. Every postpartum recovery differs, so I tweak my setup depending on my needs. Hopefully, this list helps you create a bathroom space that supports your healing journey.
