As I approach the final weeks of my pregnancy, I find myself reflecting on the journey ahead. This will be my third unmedicated home birth, and while I’ve been down this road before, each experience has been unique, teaching me new lessons along the way. In this post, I want to share how I’m personally preparing for this birth, the mental and physical strategies I’m using, and the emotions I’m navigating as the big day approaches.
Embracing the Reality of Birth
One of the first things I’ve had to come to terms with is the reality of how I give birth. With my previous pregnancies, I harbored expectations of a serene, calm birth experience—something out of a birthing goddess fantasy. However, my reality is different. My births are intense, primal, and, at times, overwhelming. And that’s okay. I’ve accepted that my birth experience won’t be pain-free or picture-perfect, but it will be powerful and empowering in its own way.
Mental Preparation: The Power of Mantras and Meditation
Mental preparation has been a cornerstone of my birth plan. I’ve been using mantras and meditations to reinforce positive and empowering thoughts. One mantra that resonates with me is, “Your contractions cannot be stronger than you because they are you.” This simple reminder helps me stay grounded and confident during labor.
In addition to mantras, I’ve been listening to birth stories, particularly home birth stories, to remind myself of the strength and power inherent in this process. These stories serve as a source of inspiration and solidarity, reminding me that I’m not alone in this journey.
The Importance of a Supportive Birth Team
One of the most critical aspects of my birth preparation is ensuring that I have a supportive team around me. I’ve carefully chosen people who believe in my ability to give birth and who know how to support me physically and emotionally. My husband, who will be there to provide the essential hip squeezes, Roxanne, my mom, and my midwife, all play vital roles in creating an environment where I feel safe and supported.
Physical Preparation: Birth Preparation Exercises and Tools
Physically, I’ve been incorporating various birth preparation exercises to help ease the labor process. I’ve learned more about pelvic mechanics with each pregnancy, and this time around, I’m focusing even more on hip shifts and other movements that can help create space and facilitate an easier birth.
I’ve continued to exercise, and plan to until I give birth, to keep myself comfortable and ensure that I have good mobility of my pelvis for birth. I have been doing our birth prep circuit daily to release common areas of tension as I prep for birth! You can grab the free birth prep guide by signing up for our newsletter.
In addition to exercises, I’ve assembled a basket of labor support tools, including a TENS unit, a birth comb, heating pad, and massage balls. These tools will help manage the physical sensations of labor, providing comfort and distraction during contractions.
I’ll also have my birth pool and the shower to use for hydrotherapy! I found the shower to be one of my favorite places to labor, but also enjoyed the tub too.
Letting Go of Expectations
Perhaps the most significant mental shift I’ve made is letting go of specific expectations for this birth. In previous pregnancies, I had a clear image of how I wanted my birth to unfold. This time, I’m approaching the experience with an open mind. Whether I’m in the pool, on the bed, or standing, my focus is on the outcome—a healthy baby and a positive birth experience—rather than the details of how I get there.
Preparing My Home and Heart
As I near 41 weeks of pregnancy, I’m preparing not just my body but also my home and my heart for the arrival of this new little one. I’ve set up my postpartum baskets, prepped my labor clothes, and made a list of tasks for my birth team to handle once labor begins. My husband has even been doing chest exercises to ensure he’s ready for those hip squeezes that I rely on so much during labor.
Emotionally, I’m savoring the final moments of this pregnancy, knowing that this is likely my last. It’s a bittersweet feeling—saying goodbye to this chapter of my life while also eagerly anticipating the new beginnings that lie ahead.
Final Thoughts
As I await the arrival of my baby, I’m filled with a mix of emotions—excitement, anxiety, and a deep sense of peace. I’ve done everything I can to prepare for this birth, and now it’s just a matter of waiting for the day to come. Whether you’re planning your first birth or your third, I hope my journey offers some insight and reassurance that no matter how many times you’ve done this before, each birth is a unique and transformative experience.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. If you’re also preparing for birth, remember to trust in your body’s wisdom, lean on your support team, and embrace the process, whatever it may bring.
