Pregnancy is a beautiful experience, but for many, the first trimester comes with an unwelcome guest: morning sickness. If you’re currently battling nausea, fatigue, and all the other symptoms of early pregnancy, you’re not alone. I know all too well how debilitating it can be to feel constantly nauseous and completely drained, especially when you have other responsibilities to manage. In this blog post, I’m sharing my go-to remedies and tips for surviving the first trimester, based on my personal experiences and what’s worked for me through six pregnancies.
1. Lemon Water: The Magic Cure for Metallic Taste
For some, morning sickness isn’t just nausea – it’s that constant, awful metallic taste in the mouth. This was a recurring issue for me during my pregnancies, and it felt like I couldn’t escape it. My solution? Lemon water. Simply squeeze an entire lemon into a bottle of water. The acidity in the lemon helps cut through that metallic taste, and the fresh flavor gave me a refreshing break from the constant queasiness.
If you’re struggling with that weird taste, this might be just the thing to help you feel more human again. Give it a try next time you need something to sip on!
2. Sea Bands: The Surprising Acupressure Solution
This might sound like something out of a remedy list you’d see for seasickness, but trust me – sea bands were a game-changer for me. These wristbands apply gentle pressure to acupressure points that help reduce nausea.
I was honestly shocked at how effective they were. I wore them religiously for about 10 weeks during one of my pregnancies, and I was so afraid to take them off because I felt like they were the only thing keeping me from feeling miserable. They don’t just work for seasickness – they work for pregnancy-related nausea too. You might just be surprised by how well they work for you.
3. Eating Protein: Don't Skip Meals!
It may seem counterintuitive, especially when food is the last thing you want to think about, but keeping your stomach fed is essential. I found that eating high-protein meals or snacks made a huge difference in my morning sickness. Protein helps stabilize blood sugar levels and prevents that nauseating, dizzy feeling you get when you’re starving.
For me, smoothies with collagen, oatmeal with protein, and small protein-packed snacks throughout the day worked wonders. Some of my favorites were cottage cheese with fruit, Paleo Valley protein sticks, Built Puff Protein Bars, and Mush overnight oats with Needed’s collagen added in. Don’t wait until you’re starving to eat, as this can make the nausea worse – eat frequently, even if it’s just a little snack here and there.
4. Unisom & B6: A Prescription for Relief
When all else failed, the combination of Unisom (a sleep aid) and B6 vitamins became my miracle cure for morning sickness. I took it at night, and the next day I felt significantly better. It’s not a magic bullet that works instantly, but it made a world of difference for me.
If you’re hesitant about taking medications during pregnancy, I completely understand. Always consult with your healthcare provider before trying something new, but this combo is a well-known and commonly recommended remedy for nausea in pregnancy. Unisom & B6 work by helping to calm the nausea without affecting your baby. I’m so glad I tried it, as it was truly the relief I needed to feel functional again.
5. Magnesium & Hydration: Keep Your Fluids Up
Hydration is key during pregnancy, and when you’re dealing with morning sickness, it’s even more important. I personally swear by magnesium supplements and electrolyte drinks, like LMNT or Needed Hydration. They help balance your hydration levels and keep your magnesium up, which can be a great aid in reducing nausea.
LMNT, in particular, is packed with electrolytes that help replenish your body and keep you feeling more stable throughout the day. It’s a little salty, which I love, and it’s been a life-saver for staying hydrated without feeling bloated. Needed’s Hydration has a more subtle flavor if you are finding stronger flavor profiles to be questionable for you right now. Magnesium can also help with muscle cramps, another common discomfort in pregnancy.
6. Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help
It’s easy to feel like you’re just supposed to suffer through the first trimester, but there are options available, and you’re not alone. If your symptoms are unbearable, don’t hesitate to talk to your healthcare provider about treatments that might work for you. In addition to the remedies I’ve mentioned, your doctor may suggest other solutions, like Diclegis (a prescription form of Unisom & B6), which has been studied for its safety during pregnancy.
Your provider is there to help you, so be open and ask questions if you need relief. There’s no shame in seeking out the help you deserve during this challenging time.
Final Thoughts: Morning Sickness Doesn't Have to Be Endured, It Can Be Managed
If you’re struggling with morning sickness, please know that there is relief. I wish I had known earlier in my pregnancies that there are so many effective ways to manage and reduce nausea. Whether it’s the sea bands, the Unisom & B6 combo, or simply ensuring you’re eating frequently (and getting in that much-needed protein), there are options out there that can help make this time a little more bearable.
Take it one day at a time, and don’t feel like you have to do this alone. You’ve got this!
