Double Hip Squeeze for Labor Comfort

Labor can be an intense experience, but there are numerous techniques to help manage the discomfort and make the process more bearable. One of my favorite labor comfort techniques is the double hip squeeze. In this blog post, I’ll share what makes this technique so effective, along with different variations that you and your partner can use to find relief during labor.

What is the Double Hip Squeeze?

The double hip squeeze involves applying pressure to the pelvic bones to release tension in the uterine ligaments. This technique helps alleviate the discomfort caused by contractions by decreasing tension in these ligaments and releasing endorphins to make contractions more bearable.

Benefits of the Double Hip Squeeze

  • Reduces Pain: Applying manual pressure to the pelvis can significantly lessen contraction pain by reducing tension in the uterine ligaments.
  • Encourages Relaxation: The relaxation benefit from counterpressure can help you manage labor better, as tension can make it harder for your baby to navigate through the pelvis.
  • Enhances Labor Progress: By helping you relax, the double hip squeeze can potentially enhance labor progress, making it easier for your cervix to dilate and your baby to move through the birth canal.

How to Perform the Double Hip Squeeze

Using Hands:

  • Find a comfortable position for both you and your partner.
  • Locate the bony bump of the femur head and place the heel of your palm in the gap right above it.
  • Apply upward and inward pressure with your fingertips pointing towards the spine.
  • Hold the pressure for the duration of the contraction, then slowly release.

Using Knees:

  • This method works well if the birthing person is in a tabletop position.
  • Stand over the hips and place the inside of your knees or shins in the same general area.
  • Squeeze your thighs together to apply pressure. This method can be less tiring if you prefer using your lower body.

Using Fabric (Rebozo, Scarf, or Bed Sheet):

  • Wrap the fabric around the hips below the belly.
  • Crisscross the fabric across the back and push and pull to compress the hips.
  • This technique can be done in various positions and can be performed by two people for more effective pressure application.

Self-Applied Counterpressure:

  • If you are alone or your partner is occupied, you can use a fabric and a wooden spoon.
  • Tie the fabric around the femur head area, insert the wooden spoon through the knot, and twist to tighten it around your hips.
  • Hold the pressure for the duration of the contraction and then release.

Preparation and Practice

It’s essential to practice these techniques before your labor begins so that both you and your partner are familiar with them when the time comes. Strengthening your partner’s chest and triceps can also be beneficial since they will be applying pressure for extended periods.
