Red Raspberry Leaf Tea: Natural Induction Method

If you’re nearing the end of your pregnancy or the final trimester, you may be thinking about incorporating some natural induction methods.  These methods could include eating dates, evening primose rose oil, or eating all the pineapple in hopes of meeting your baby sooner rather than later.  However, research is mixed on whether or not these “natural” induction methods will induce your labor!

Let’s discuss whether or not drinking red raspberry leaf tea throughout your pregnancy will induce your labor, or if there are any benefits to drinking it for your pregnancy!

Table of Contents

What is Red Raspberry Leaf Tea?

Red raspberry leaf tea is made from the dried leaves of the red raspberry plant (Rubus idaeus). Unlike the fruit, the leaves have a mild flavor and are rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, E, and B, calcium, iron, and magnesium. These nutrients are believed to contribute to its health benefits, particularly for pregnant women.

Is there research that supports Red Raspberry Leaf Tea induces labor??

There are no research studies that support red raspberry leaf tea will induce your labor–but most believe that the tea will NOT induce labor, but rather prepare your body for birth.

While there are no research studies, there is anecdotal evidence that supports red raspberry leaf tea may be beneficial during pregnancy and labor (and even during your menstrual cycles).

How does Red Raspberry Leaf Tea works?

The theory is that drinking red raspberry leaf tea will help to strengthen your uterus, as opposed to induce your labor.  If your uterus is stronger, it would be able to contract more effectively which could reduce your labor length and decrease your risk of postpartum hemorrhage.  But again, there is no clinical research that supports these claims—simply professional observations and herbalist recommendations.  The lack of a research study does not mean it is not beneficial, more that no one wanted to pay for the study.

Red raspberry leaf tea may also help with your menstrual cycle, by reducing period cramps, and due to the high antioxidant concentration may also be a helpful labor drink.

How to Use Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

When to Start: It’s generally recommended to start drinking red raspberry leaf tea in the second trimester (around 28 weeks) and increase the amount as you approach your due date. However, there is mixed guidance on this!  Some day to drink one cup per trimester (1 cup in the first, 2 cups in the second, and 3 cups in the third), but others say to wait til you are in the third trimester.  Because there is no set guidance on how much or when to begin drinking the tea, having a conversation with your provider or a nutritionist on their recommendation can be helpful.

Dosage: Begin with one cup per day in the second trimester. Gradually increase to two or three cups per day in the third trimester. Some women continue to drink the tea postpartum to aid in recovery and breastfeeding.

Preparation: To make red raspberry leaf tea, steep one teaspoon of dried red raspberry leaves in one cup of boiling water for about 10-15 minutes. You can drink it hot or iced, plain or with a bit of honey or lemon for added flavor.

For my own pregnancy, I drank 1-2 cups of red raspberry leaf tea nightly starting in the third trimester.  When I drank the tea, I usually found that my belly felt harder (similar to a Braxton Hicks contraction), and while I am not entirely convinced it made my labors faster, drinking the tea helped me mentally shift towards birth preparation.

Risks & Benefits of Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

There is no clinical research study that supports these claims, but these are the common anecdotal evidence and professional observations made about red raspberry leaf tea.

Benefits of Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

  1. Uterine Tonic: One of the most touted benefits of red raspberry leaf tea is its ability to tone the uterus. It is believed to help strengthen the uterine muscles, which may lead to more effective contractions during labor and a potentially shorter labor duration.

  2. Rich in Nutrients: The tea is packed with essential vitamins and minerals that are beneficial during pregnancy. These nutrients can support overall health, improve immune function, and contribute to better skin and bone health.

  3. Hormonal Balance: Red raspberry leaf tea may help balance hormones, which is particularly beneficial during the hormonal fluctuations of pregnancy and postpartum.

  4. Reduced Postpartum Bleeding: Some studies suggest that drinking red raspberry leaf tea can reduce postpartum bleeding due to its astringent properties.

Considerations and Precautions

While red raspberry leaf tea is generally considered safe for most pregnant women, it’s important to consult your healthcare provider before incorporating it into your routine. Here are a few considerations:

  • Medical Conditions: If you have a history of preterm labor, uterine surgery, or other pregnancy complications, discuss with your provider whether red raspberry leaf tea is suitable for you.
  • Allergic Reactions: Although rare, some individuals may be allergic to red raspberry leaves. Discontinue use if you experience any adverse reactions such as rash, itching, or gastrointestinal upset.
  • Quality Matters: Ensure you purchase high-quality, organic red raspberry leaf tea from a reputable source to avoid contaminants.

Our Professional Opinions

Roxanne: Labor & Delivery Nurse

The evidence is not convincing that affect when labor will start, the length of labor, or the postpartum period. I usually don’t recommend it as a way to induce labor, UNLESS you like the taste of Red Raspberry Leaf Tea.

There are no adverse outcomes founded from drinking the tea during pregnancy. So as many in our survey stated as the reason they drank it “Why not!”

I personally loved the taste of Red Raspberry Leaf Tea, so i drank a ton of it during my pregnancy with Lily and Colin. I did have short active labors, they were around 3/4 hours with each labor. Except I did have heavier bleeding with both deliveries.

Gina: Birth Doula

There isn’t a research study that supports the claims about red raspberry leaf tea, but from my personal use over the past 3 pregnancies, I found it helpful!  While there is no evidence that supports it does much, there are also no adverse effects, so if drinking the tea makes you feel better mentally–go for it.

If drinking the tea or trying to incorporate other “natural induction” methods stresses you out more, then I would not recommend it.

For me personally, when I drink the tea, I find that my belly tends to get tighter/harden, so I can believe the claims that it strengthens the uterus.  My active labors tend to be around 3-4 hours, and I have had very minimal bleeding at birth–however, this is just my personal experience and may not have anything to do with the tea!

How I drink the tea is once I am in the third trimester, I have a cup or two of tea at night before bed.  As I near my due date, I may increase the amount to 3 cups, but usually stay around 1-2 cups daily.
