Welcome to Week 10 of your pregnancy journey! This week, we’ll dive into the exciting developments happening with your baby, the changes you may be experiencing, and I’ll also share my own journey since I’m currently pregnant with baby number four. If you are currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant, make sure to follow along with me through the entire Pregnancy What to Expect series!
What's Happening with Your Baby
At 10 weeks, your baby is approximately the size of a kumquat or a Polly Pocket toy. Despite their tiny size, significant changes are underway! Here’s a glimpse into your baby’s development:
Organ Development: All major organs are now formed, although they will continue to mature throughout pregnancy. The spinal cord is still developing, so it’s an especially critical period for this area.
Physical Changes: Fingers and toes are no longer webbed, and the baby’s limbs are beginning to move more. Ultrasounds at this stage may show little movements like waving or kicking.
Proportions: The baby’s head is still quite large, making up about half of their body length as the brain continues to grow and develop rapidly.
Changes You Might Experience
As you approach the end of your first trimester, changes are happening rapidly, both for your baby and your body. Here are some common experiences during Week 10:
Morning Sickness Relief: For many, nausea begins to subside around this time. If it persists, remedies like Vitamin B6 and Unisom may provide relief (always consult your provider first).
Energy Levels: Fatigue might still be present, but you may start feeling a bit more energetic. Use this newfound energy to engage in light physical activity, which can improve mood and overall well-being.
Mood Swings: Hormonal fluctuations can lead to mood swings. Practicing mindfulness or journaling can help you process your emotions.
Digestive Changes: Constipation, diarrhea, or heartburn might occur. Staying hydrated and including fiber-rich foods in your diet can help manage these symptoms.
My Personal Experience in Week 10
So overall, I’m feeling pretty good! I have more energy, the nausea has subsided substantially, so I’m finally able to work out. I’m starting to feel more like myself again, or as much as I can while pregnant. It was really exciting to be able to have our first visit with our midwives where we heard baby’s heartbeat, and we could see that things are progressing normally. It’s always a point of anxiety for me, so it was very relieving to be able to hear the baby and know that everything is going well so far.
Here are some of my personal insights and tips as you inch closer to the second trimester:
Prenatal Appointments and Care: Around week 10, many expectant parents have their first prenatal appointment. This visit is crucial for establishing a care plan and discussing your preferences. If you’re considering community birth options like home birth, it’s a good time to explore providers and establish secondary care with a hospital clinic as a backup.
Exploring Birth Options: While many choose hospital births, others may explore home births or birth centers. Community birth options often involve longer, personalized appointments with midwives who prioritize holistic care. However, it’s essential to have a backup plan in case a transfer to a hospital becomes necessary.
Financial accessibility can be a challenge for home births, as they are often not fully covered by insurance. Some midwives offer sliding scale fees or payment plans to make care more accessible.
Movement and Wellness: Pregnancy doesn’t mean giving up on fitness. In fact, staying active can ease pregnancy discomforts and prepare your body for birth. If you’re returning to exercise after a break, start slow to avoid soreness. Aim for short, manageable sessions and gradually increase intensity.
Consider joining a prenatal fitness program that incorporates birth preparation exercises and pelvic floor strengthening. These programs are designed to help you feel strong, minimize pain, and prepare for labor and delivery.
Conclusion
As you move closer to the second trimester, take time to reflect on your journey and set intentions for the months ahead. Whether it’s planning for prenatal classes, choosing a provider, or preparing your home for your baby’s arrival, each step brings you closer to meeting your little one.
Remember, every pregnancy is unique, so listen to your body and reach out for support when needed. Whether you’re navigating morning sickness or exploring birth options, you’re not alone on this journey.
