Week 7: What to Expect During Your Pregnancy

Welcome to Week 7 of your pregnancy journey! This week, we’ll dive into the exciting developments happening with your baby, the changes you may be experiencing, and I’ll also share my own journey since I’m currently pregnant with baby number four. If you are currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant, make sure to follow along with me through the entire Pregnancy What to Expect series!

What's Happening with Your Baby

At 7 weeks, your baby is roughly the size of a raspberry—about half an inch long! Here’s a glimpse into your baby’s development:

  1. Limbs and Features: At this stage, your little one is starting to develop distinct features. The legs, which initially resembled a tiny tail, are now budding into what will soon become tiny limbs, complete with webbed feet. Meanwhile, the arm buds are also forming, signaling the early beginnings of movement.

  2. Organ and Brain Development: In terms of brain development, the neural tube is closing, which is a crucial milestone for your baby’s central nervous system. This week also sees the heart, kidneys, and even the beginnings of teeth taking shape. It’s incredible to think that all these transformations are happening in just a matter of days!

  3. Umbilical Cord Development: Another essential development during this week is the formation of the umbilical cord, which is vital for delivering nutrients and oxygen to your baby while also facilitating the removal of waste.

Changes You Might Experience

As your baby grows, your body continues to adjust. Here are some common experiences during Week 7:

  1. Morning Sickness and Fatigue: At 7 weeks, many women begin feeling typical pregnancy symptoms such as nausea and fatigue. This can be difficult to deal with, so listen to your body and rest as needed.

My Personal Experience in Week 7

Navigating the 7th week of pregnancy while already being a mother to three has been a unique journey filled with its own set of challenges and joys. Here are some more personal insights:

  1. 24/7 Nausea: For me, the symptoms are ramping up! I’m feeling significantly more nauseous than I did last week, and I’ve noticed a new twist: if I let myself get too hungry, I might end up throwing up. This is a first for me in my pregnancies, and it’s a reminder of how unique each experience can be. My gag reflex has also become exceptionally sensitive, which adds to the mix of discomfort I’m feeling.

  2. Strong Gag Reflex: One of the challenges I’ve faced this week is taking prenatal vitamins. With my nausea being so intense, I find it hard to keep anything down, especially pills. To combat this, I’ve switched to Needed’s prenatal vitamin powder, which I mix into my orange juice or smoothies in the morning. This has been a game-changer for me, ensuring I get the necessary nutrients to support my baby’s rapid development.

  3. Closely Monitoring Baby: With a history of loss, I find comfort in monitoring my pregnancy closely. That’s why we went for another ultrasound this week. Fortunately, we could see our baby and even catch a glimpse of that precious little heartbeat. It’s a powerful reminder of how rapidly our little one is growing, and I’m looking forward to seeing more significant changes in our upcoming ultrasound.

Exciting News: Gender Reveal!

In another thrilling turn of events, we opted to do a blood test to find out our baby’s sex early on. Drumroll, please—we’re having another baby girl! Knowing the gender helps me bond with my baby, especially during these early stages when everything feels so surreal. I completely understand that some parents prefer to wait until birth for that surprise, and I think that’s an exciting choice too. Ultimately, it’s all about what feels right for you and your family.

Conclusion

Every pregnancy is unique, and Week 7 can bring its own set of experiences and challenges. It’s essential to listen to your body, take care of your mental and physical health, and prepare for the exciting changes ahead.
