Week 9: What to Expect During Your Pregnancy

Welcome to Week 9 of your pregnancy journey! This week, we’ll dive into the exciting developments happening with your baby, the changes you may be experiencing, and I’ll also share my own journey since I’m currently pregnant with baby number four. If you are currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant, make sure to follow along with me through the entire Pregnancy What to Expect series!

What's Happening with Your Baby

At 9 weeks, your baby is approximately the size of a Hershey Kiss or a pecan. Here’s a glimpse into your baby’s development:

  1. Heart Development: Your baby’s heart is progressing and now has four chambers! While the valves are still forming, the heart is continuing its development, and your baby’s heartbeat may be detectable with a Doppler ultrasound at your prenatal appointments.
  2. Eyes and Eyelids: The eyelids are still fused, but the eyes are fully formed! The eyelids won’t open until later in pregnancy, usually around week 27, so if your baby is born prematurely, this is a key thing we look out for.
  3. Arms and Legs Growing: The bones and cartilage in your baby’s arms and legs are developing, and the fingers and toes are starting to form. Though they still have some webbing between them, individual digits are becoming more distinct. Vitamin D and calcium supplements can be really helpful right now to support this growth.
  4. Head Proportions: Your baby’s head is still massive compared to the body—it’s about 50% of the baby’s size right now! This disproportionate size might look funny on ultrasounds, but it’s all part of your little one’s development. Don’t worry, they’ll grow into it!
  5. Movement: By now, your baby may start moving its arms and legs separately, making it a lot easier to detect flutters. These tiny, fluttering movements feel like little bubbles or a butterfly’s wings, and they can happen as early as 9 weeks for some moms!
  6. Weight Gain: Your baby is starting to put on weight, too. This rapid weight gain is crucial as they move toward the end of the first trimester and into the next stages of growth. It’s amazing how much happens during this phase, and it’s a reminder of how quickly everything is progressing.

Changes You Might Experience

As your baby grows, your body continues to adjust. Here are some common experiences during Week 9:

  1. Morning Sickness: While some mamas may start to feel a little relief from morning sickness, others are still grappling with it long into the first trimester. I’ll share more about what I am doing to deal with morning sickness below.

  2. Acne: Hormonal changes can sometimes lead to breakouts. While I’ve been lucky to have clear skin during pregnancy (thanks to pregnancy hormones!), some moms experience acne flare-ups.

  3. Insomnia: Sleep disruptions are common in the first trimester, and you might find yourself waking up multiple times during the night, especially to pee. In fact, I’ve been waking up at 3 am every night, which has me wondering: could this be a sign of early labor? We’ll see if it ends up being a foreshadowing of when things start!

  4. Vaginal Discharge: The mucus plug is forming now, and this might lead to an increase in vaginal discharge. It’s completely normal, but if you ever have concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider.

My Personal Experience in Week 9

Ah, the first trimester: the time of fluctuating symptoms! While some mamas may start to feel a little relief from morning sickness, others are still grappling with it, and I’m no exception. At this point, you’re likely still feeling the effects of the pregnancy hormones and all that comes with them.

For me, morning sickness has been the most prominent symptom, but I’m happy to report that some remedies are finally working for me this time around. I’ve been battling nausea and fatigue, but I’ve found a combination of strategies that help me manage it. Here are some of the remedies that have worked wonders for me:

  • Seasickness Bands: These little wristbands apply pressure to a key acupressure point on the wrist, and I was shocked by how effective they are. I never used them in previous pregnancies, but now I can’t go without them. I’ve found that they reduce my nausea and keep me feeling more human. If you’re skeptical, give them a try—you might be as surprised as I was!

  • Frequent High-Protein Meals: I’ve had to keep a constant supply of protein on hand, and for whatever reason, I’ve been loving Built Bars. I’m not typically a protein bar fan, but right now, they’re my saving grace. If I go too long without eating, my blood sugar drops, and I feel the nausea hit hard. Having something easy to grab keeps my energy stable.

  • LMNT Electrolyte Drink Mix: Drinking a magnesium-rich drink like LMNT has been another helpful trick for managing nausea. The sodium and magnesium levels help me stay hydrated and calm down some of the discomfort from my morning sickness.

  • Unisom and B6: After consulting with my midwife, I’ve been using a combination of Unisom and B6 to help with morning sickness. This combo has been a game-changer! I take a half Unisom tablet and a B6 vitamin before bed, and it helps me sleep through the night while keeping the nausea at bay the next day. I’m so thankful for this tip!
