My Checklist for a Prenatal Vitamin as a CNM: Which one do I recommend??

This post is sponsored by Needed, a brand I genuinely use personally and recommend to my patients. I use the same guidelines and standards when evaluating any prenatal vitamin in the clinic that I will use to review in the blog, to compare and ensure it is a good option for my patients! This is my honest review.

Is a gummy Prenatal Vitamin a good option??

When it comes to prenatal vitamins, as a midwife, I always look for a few key things to ensure my patients are taking one that provides the key nutrients we want in pregnancy and is in a form they will be consistent with. I review every prenatal vitamin my patient is taking to ensure it includes the key vitamins in amounts that go beyond the RDA to the optimal dosages for those vitamins! I go over what we want to see them getting during their pregnancy. If the vitamin they are taking does not include the key things we discussed, they can consider other options, but they are never required to switch.

With needing to navigate nausea in the first and sometimes second trimester, and pill aversions for some, having the option of powders and gummies makes it more accessible for someone to take their prenatal vitamins. Unfortunately, with gummy vitamins, it has been notoriously difficult to find one that is high-quality with the vitamins we want, and does not taste terrible!

Until now…Needed just launched their Prenatal Multi Gummy, which is the most nutrient-dense prenatal gummy on the market!**

Now you don’t have to choose between the prenatal you’ll actually take and the nutrition you deserve.

What are the key things I am looking for?

When I sit down to review anyone’s records and supplements, I always look at their prenatal for these key vitamins:

  • Folate/Folic Acid 400-800mcg
  • Choline 450 – 930 mg
  • Vitamin D 4000IU

The next few, I am looking to see whether they are included at all:

  • Omega-3/DHA
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Iodine
  • Selenium
  • Calcium
  • B-vitamins – B6/B12

Then I look at the quality:

  • Sourcing and formulation
  • Third-party tested

Why Do I Care?

Folate/Folic Acid is important for preventing neural tube defects*, also known as Vitamin B9!
Choline supports fetal brain development and works with folate for neural tube development*
Vitamin D supports bone and tooth development and is also a key nutrient for many bodily functions.* When our Vitamin D levels are optimal during pregnancy, they have been shown to support a healthy, full-term pregnancy and physical recovery after birth.*. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31669079/)
Omega-3 supports brain and eye development, and research suggests it supports a balanced mood, including in postpartum, as well as your body’s natural recovery process*
Iron: Not everyone will need the same amount of iron supplementation, if at all. Iron, especially in common forms like ferrous sulfate, can cause uncomfortable GI symptoms when taken. This is why I recommend testing your iron levels, and only taking a well-tolerated form, like Needed’s iron (in bisglycinate chelate form), if your levels show a true need.
Zinc: Supports immune system function for mom and DNA synthesis, placental development, and brain development for the baby.*
Iodine: Supports thyroid health, and the thyroid controls brain development, nervous system, and metabolism during pregnancy*. Iodine supports brain development and cognitive function in babies.*
Calcium: Support bone and teeth development alongside vitamin D; also supports organ and muscle development and clotting mechanisms.*
B-Vitamins: B6 is helpful for nausea in pregnancy, and B12 supports nervous system and brain development, blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis, along with folate!*
Selenium: Supports thyroid health and placental function.*
Sourcing and formulation – I always want to check this because where a nutrient is sourced affects quality, and the formulation affects how well your body can actually absorb it.
Third-party testing is something I always look for, too. It confirms that what’s on the label is actually in the product. Needed’s products go through 2,000+ quality checks per batch, from raw materials to finished product.

How does Needed's Prenatal Gummy Stack up??

#1: It tastes DELICIOUS, so good!

This is definitely the best-tasting gummy prenatal vitamin I have ever tried.

Needed’s Prenatal Multi Gummy comes in two flavors per jar: Strawberry-Banana and Orange-Passionfruit-Pineapple. I do prefer the strawberry-banana flavor, but both are truly so good.

I do notice a bit of a vitamin taste on the initial bite every time, but it goes away quickly, and I don’t notice it on the next two gummies.

After trying these, I truly understand why my kids keep asking me for more of their own gummy vitamins! I wanted to keep eating them, but the big difference is that this prenatal gummy has over 17 nutrients, and my kids’ vitamin does not compare!

But on to the more important part:
what is in this prenatal??

I will go through the vitamins in the order I listed above!

✅Folate is dosed at 920 mcg and is the methylfolate form. Methylfolate is the body’s active form of folate, so unlike folic acid, it doesn’t need to be converted before your body can use it.

🟨Choline is dosed at 55mg, which is below the recommended optimal dose, but that is a formulation limitation, not an oversight. This amount is on par with or above what other gummy vitamins include.
✅This is why Needed recommends adding their standalone Choline supplement, which provides 500 mg of choline chloride per capsule, to reach the recommended 450-930 mg range. It is available in a bundle for cost savings!

✅Vitamin D is dosed at 4000 IU, which falls within the range that newer research supports as both safe and effective during pregnancy.

❌ Omega-3/DHA is not included because it can’t be put into a gummy vitamin at a meaningful dosage, so it was left out. Omega-3 needs can vary from person to person, so for some, it may be more beneficial to have it separately. Diet can cover some of our omega-3 needs, but if it’s not coming from food, plan to add it as a standalone product alongside the Gummy

Iron is not included in any of Needed’s prenatal vitamins because the needs are individual, and not everyone needs Iron supplementation. Basing your iron supplementation around your lab values is a more evidence-based plan of care.

Zinc is present in higher amounts than in other prenatals and prenatal gummies at 6.5mg

Iodine is present at 150mcg per serving

Selenium is present at 70 mcg versus other brands excluding it completely or at much lower amounts

 Calcium is not present

B-vitamins like B6/B12 are present and dosed at a higher level than can support nausea, especially in the first trimester.

If you choose this gummy vitamin, I would recommend adding an additional choline and omega-3/DHA option, and adding iron supplementation if needed based on lab work. Needed has discounted plans that offer these!

Comparison based on each brand’s publicly labeled daily serving amounts as of June 2026, per official brand and retailer listings (Walmart, Amazon, Target).

Needed’s Prenatal Multi Gummy is my top choice when it comes to a prenatal gummy. It offers 4x more nutrition than leading prenatals‡, including capsules like Ritual’s, and 8x the leading prenatal gummy.‖

OLLY and SmartyPants are using amounts close to the RDA recommendations for B6, B12, and vitamin D.

Needed’s doses are much closer to what the actual research supports, particularly on B6 (supporting nausea relief*) and vitamin D (real blood-level sufficiency*).  They are clinically studied dosages, based on Needed’s IRB approved clinical study.

OLLY notably has zero selenium, an immune- and thyroid-supportive mineral I like to see included if possible.

What do I recommend??

If you’re capsule-averse, dealing with first-trimester nausea, or want a prenatal you’ll actually look forward to taking every day, this is the one I’m pointing patients toward.

Pair it with a separate DHA, choline, and, if your labs call for it, a dosed-to-you iron — and you’ve got an evidence-aligned, genuinely enjoyable routine.
