Organizing Chaos: Homeschooling and Parenting While Running a Business

Welcome to Moments with MamasteFit! In this mini episode, I share my strategies for homeschooling my first grader, managing a full-time business, and primarily solo parenting as a military spouse. I’ll talk about the importance of support systems, prioritization, and effective scheduling and I’ll give you a detailed look into my weekly routines, homeschooling curriculums, and tips for maintaining a balance between personal time and work responsibilities. I’ll answer the question I get all the time, “How do you do it all?” and give you the real scoop on how I juggle, prioritize, and (mostly) keep my sanity intact.

Finding Your Village

The biggest secret? I don’t do it alone. Whether you call it a village, a team, or a support network, lean into the people around you. For me, that means:

  • My parents: My parents live nearby and regularly step in to watch the kids.

  • My sister: My sister and MamasteFit Co-Owner Roxanne and I tag-team childcare whenever we can.

  • My husband: When he’s home, he’s an active partner, helping with lessons, daycare drop-offs, meals—you name it.

Recognizing you need help—and actually asking for it—is an act of strength, not weakness.

The Power of “No”

It’s tempting to say yes to every opportunity—new collaborations, extra doula births, that online course I’ve been dreaming to build. Right now, my family and my business are thriving, but only because I’ve ruthlessly prioritized what matters most and said no to the rest.

  • Business: I’ve paused in-person doula work because the unpredictability clashed with my homeschooling schedule and family-focused lifestyle.

  • Personal goals: My PhD dreams and expanded course offerings are still on the vision board—but will wait until this phase passes.

You can’t do everything, and that’s okay. This season of life is temporary.

Block-Scheduling: My Weekly Blueprint

Every Sunday evening (or Saturday morning), I carve out two hours to plan my week in Google Calendar. Each day is a set of color-coded blocks and might look something like this:

Time BlockFocusNotes
MorningHomeschooling & Kids’ activitiesTable work, play-based, field trip days
MiddayBaby & toddler careSensory bins, fine motor play
AfternoonBusiness tasksFilming, editing, content creation
Early EveningFamily time & dinner prepOne-on-one with each child
EveningSelf-care & restWorkout, reading, puzzles

Within each block, I list three priorities—starting with my must-do task and ending with “if there’s time…” items. I also schedule mini-breaks (for me and my first grader!) to prevent burnout.

Homeschooling Strategy

A Blended Approach

Our county’s blended program allows my daughter to attend public school two days a week and homeschool the other three. This offers her:

  • Access to gifted-program resources, clubs, and sports

  • A small, familiar class with her long-time teacher

  • Social time with peers

Next year, my younger two will join a half-day preschool, giving me dedicated mornings with my first grader.

Curriculum Mix

No one curriculum ticks every box, so we blend ours:

  • Reading & Phonics: Logic of English

  • Handwriting & Spelling: Handwriting Without Tears

  • Math: Mammoth Math (plus a dash of Beast Academy games)

  • Science: Blossom & Root, with a mix of table work, outdoor learning, and videos

I always snag free samples, read other homeschoolers’ reviews in state-specific Facebook groups, and tweak our mix as we grow.

Play, Field Trips & Themes

  • Play-based learning: Board games (Junior Monopoly, Outfox), puzzles, art

  • Field trips: One weekly adventure—to the zoo, aquarium, children’s museum—followed by a related at-home project (drawings, reading, puzzles)

  • Weekly themes: I let the kids choose (spring gardens, rainbows, space…), then design sensory bins, fine-motor crafts, and art stations around it. When I need a breather, a movie or grandma steps in.

Balancing Business & Babies

I plan two days in my week for dedicated work days, as uninterrupted by other demands as possible! Wednesdays and Thursdays are my studio days: filming workouts, recording podcasts, writing blogs, and editing content without interruptions. On those days:

  • I drop the older kids at their schools.

  • My mom cares for the younger two.

  • My calendar lists tasks in order of impact—first filming, then editing, then admin.

I also carve out time for my own workouts, date nights with my husband, and quiet hobbies. Scheduling self-care isn’t optional; it’s essential to keep stress low and energy high.

Lessons Learned & Tips for You

  • Build your team: Identify who can help—and ask them.

  • Schedule everything: Block-out time for work, school, play, and rest.

  • Prioritize & say no: Do the high-impact tasks first, and let go of the rest.

  • Stay flexible: Embrace the homeschool perk of flexible timing—if today’s blocks don’t work, shift to evening or weekend.

  • 1% adjustments: Small changes—like having a weekly theme or a shared Google Calendar—compound into big wins.

What’s Next for Me

  • Return to running: I’m training for a marathon, guided by our newly updated Return to Running program.

  • Content expansion: More in-depth workout series, nutrition guides, and perhaps—someday—a PhD in human movement.
