Week 31 of Pregnancy: What to Expect

Welcome to Week 31 of your pregnancy journey! As you approach the final stretch, you may be experiencing a mix of excitement, anticipation, and a few discomforts. Here, we’ll cover what to expect for both you and your baby during this week, along with some personal insights from my own experience as I navigate my fourth pregnancy.

What's Happening with Your Baby

At 31 weeks, your baby is approximately the size of a half-gallon of Sunny D or a coconut, if you prefer a more natural comparison. Here’s a glimpse into your baby’s development:

  1. Movement and Positioning: Your baby can now move their head from side to side, which helps strengthen their neck muscles. They are also starting to run out of room in your womb, causing them to settle into the classic fetal position. This involves tucking their knees and chin into their chest, a position that prepares them for birth.

  2. Senses and Brain Development: The rapid brain development continues, enhancing all five senses—sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. These senses will be crucial for your baby as they adjust to the world outside the womb.

  3. Kicks and Hiccups: You might feel kicks in various parts of your abdomen. This can be due to the baby’s position, where sometimes their feet or hands may be in different places. An interesting indicator of whether your baby is head down is the location of their hiccups. If you feel them lower in your belly, it’s a good sign that your baby is in the right position.

Changes You Might Experience

As your baby grows, your body continues to adjust. Here are some common experiences during Week 31:

  1. Discomforts: Lower back pain and hip pain may become more pronounced as your baby settles deeper into your pelvis. This added weight and pressure can cause more significant discomfort.

  2. Breast Changes: You may notice your breasts leaking colostrum, the nutrient-rich milk your body has been producing since early pregnancy. This is perfectly normal, and you might find breast pads helpful to manage any leakage.

  3. Sleep Challenges: Sleep might be harder to come by due to discomfort and hormonal changes. Techniques like drinking calming teas and listening to meditation can aid in achieving better rest.

  4. Heat Sensitivity: If you’re pregnant during the summer months, you may feel more sensitive to heat. Staying cool can be challenging but necessary for comfort.

Preparing for Baby

As you inch closer to your due date, it’s a great time to start preparing for your baby’s arrival:

  1. Parenting Classes: Now is an excellent time to sign up for newborn care classes or infant CPR courses. These can provide valuable skills and confidence for when your baby arrives.

  2. Baby Shower and Registry: Many expectant parents plan their baby showers around this time. If you haven’t yet, creating a baby registry can help friends and family know what you need.

  3. Blessing Way Ceremony: For my fourth pregnancy, instead of a traditional baby shower, I’m planning a Blessing Way. This ceremony involves friends sharing positive wishes for the birth and creating bracelets as symbols of support. It’s a beautiful way to set a positive tone for the upcoming birth.

  4. Home Birth Preparation: If you’re planning a home birth, now is the time to gather your home birth kit and start nesting. Organizing your home to welcome the new baby can be both exciting and calming.

My Personal Experience in Week 31

Navigating the 31st week of pregnancy while already being a mother to three has been a unique journey filled with its own set of challenges and joys. Here are some more personal insights:

  1. Managing Sleep: Sleep has been a significant challenge for me this pregnancy. I’ve been struggling with insomnia, which I suspect is partly due to low iron levels. To combat this, I’ve been taking iron supplements for about four weeks now, and thankfully, my anxiety has reduced, making it a bit easier to fall asleep. Drinking sleepy time tea and listening to meditation tracks at night has become a part of my bedtime routine, which has helped calm my mind and body.

  2. Heat Sensitivity: This pregnancy has made me particularly sensitive to heat. Living in North Carolina during the summer months has been tough, especially since I enjoy staying active by going for walks. To cope, I recently bought a walking treadmill for my desk. This has been a lifesaver, allowing me to stay active indoors where it’s air-conditioned. I can walk while working on videos or writing blogs, and it’s easy to move the treadmill for a quick walk while my kids play.

  3. Preparing for Birth: With my fourth baby on the way, I’m not having a traditional baby shower but instead planning a Blessing Way. This ceremony focuses on setting positive intentions for the birth and involves creating bracelets with friends that symbolize their support. During labor, we all cut our bracelets at the same time to send good vibes. This ritual has been a meaningful way to connect with my community and prepare mentally for the birth.

  4. Home Birth Readiness: As I approach the final weeks, my home birth kit has arrived, and I’m beginning to nest. This involves organizing the house, setting up the baby’s space, and mentally preparing for the upcoming birth. It’s an exciting time as we get everything ready to welcome our new family member.

Conclusion

Every pregnancy is unique, and Week 31 can bring its own set of experiences and challenges. It’s essential to listen to your body, take care of your mental and physical health, and prepare for the exciting changes ahead.
