Week 15: What to Expect During Your Pregnancy

Welcome to Week 15 of your pregnancy journey! This week, we are moving deeper into the second trimester, often called the “honeymoon phase” of pregnancy. Many moms-to-be experience increased energy, fewer symptoms, and a renewed sense of well-being. Here, we’ll cover what to expect for both you and your baby during this week, along with some personal insights from my own experience as I navigate my fourth pregnancy.

What's Happening with Your Baby

At 15 weeks, your baby is approximately the size of an avocado, measuring approximately 6.4 inches long. Here’s a glimpse into your baby’s development:

  1. Developing Ears: Baby can now start to hear sounds from the outside world, including your voice! It’s a great time to start talking, reading, or singing to your baby.

  2. Joints Are Forming: Your baby’s joints are getting stronger, and they may start moving more. You might not feel those movements just yet, but they’re happening!

  3. Breathing & Swallowing: Baby is practicing essential skills like breathing amniotic fluid and strengthening the sucking reflex for future feeding.

  4. Genetic Screenings: Around this time, some providers offer genetic screening options like the quad screen and amniocentesis. These tests can help identify potential genetic disorders and neural tube defects. If you have questions about these screenings, talk to your healthcare provider to decide what’s best for you.

Changes You Might Experience

As your baby grows, your body continues to adjust. Here are some common experiences during Week 15:

  1. Increased Libido: Many women experience a boost in sex drive due to hormonal changes. As long as there are no complications, it’s safe to enjoy intimacy.

  2. Appetite, Heartburn, & Indigestion: With morning sickness fading, you may feel hungrier. Focus on nutrient-dense foods to support both you and your growing baby. Unfortunately for some, heartburn and indigestion begin to make an appearance. This is due to progesterone, which relaxes the muscles in your esophagus, leading to more frequent heartburn. Eating smaller meals and avoiding spicy foods may help.

  3. Swollen, Bleeding Gums: Hormonal changes can make your gums more sensitive. Keep up with dental hygiene and consider an extra cleaning at the dentist.

  4. Nose Bleeds & Congestion: The increased blood volume can lead to stuffiness and occasional nosebleeds. Staying hydrated and using a humidifier can help alleviate these symptoms.

Nutrition and Safe Foods During Pregnancy

Wondering what’s safe to eat? Some great resources include:

Some common questions moms have:

  • Can I eat oysters and clams? Cooked oysters and clams are safe, but avoid raw ones.

  • What about deli meat? Heating deli meat until steaming reduces the risk of listeria, making it safer to eat.

My Personal Experience in Week 15

Navigating the 15th week of pregnancy while already being a mother to three has been a unique journey filled with its own set of challenges and joys. Here are some more personal insights:

This week has been pretty uneventful (which is a good thing!). I’ve had more energy, which has allowed me to stay consistent with workouts. I even completed the cardio portion—something I typically skip! My goal for next week is to complete all four strength workouts, possibly with conditioning and an optional pelvic stability session.

One new symptom I’ve experienced is pregnancy acne, which I’m managing with natural skincare products. I’ve also been practicing lymphatic drainage massage to help with congestion and maintain healthy circulation.

I continue using Primally Pure’s belly balm, and so far, no stretch marks! (Though genetics definitely play a role.) If you’re looking for great pregnancy skincare, check them out with code MAMASTEFIT for a discount!

Conclusion

Every pregnancy is unique, and Week 15 can bring its own set of experiences and challenges. I’m hoping to maintain my energy and stick to my fitness routine next week. Pregnancy is a journey with ups and downs, but staying active and taking care of myself makes a big difference. It’s essential to listen to your body, take care of your mental and physical health, and prepare for the exciting changes ahead.
